Bob Knight and the Cleveland Indians Are Bobblehead Friends

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum are releasing two special-edition bobbleheads to commemorate basketball coaching legend Bob Knight. The first one shows the former IU coach wearing his signature red sweater and is being released in partnership with Knight Legacy, the foundation founded by Knight’s son Pat. The other figure, which is being produced in collaboration with IU Athletics, depicts Knight throwing his famous chair after becoming frustrated with the referees during a February 1985 game against Purdue.

CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) — What do Cleveland’s mayor, the city’s favorite showman and a Yale baseball-playing president have in common? They’re all featured on bobbleheads that will be given away at Bridgeport Bluefish games this season.

Baseball has had a long history with bobbleheads, dating back to the late 1950’s. Initially they were generic cherub faced “nodders” although during the 1960’s player specific models began to appear. The craze really took off in the 1990’s with a variety of different poses and specialty designs. They became a fan favorite at MLB ballparks, generating lines that rivaled those for a new home run record or a celebrity guest appearance on the radio.

Often the bobbleheads depict a memorable moment from an athlete’s career or a more positive side of their personality. They can also capture a more unusual facet of an athlete’s character or a bit of pop culture. For example, a bobblehead of Wisconsin congressman and presidential candidate Robert M. La Follette features his renowned oratorical style and signature pompadour.
