In the summer of 2002, Brad Novak took a PR internship with the Rockford RiverHawks minor league baseball team. Part of the job involved handling bobblehead day, and the fervor surrounded this strange piece of memorabilia swept him up in its wave. He began collecting them — and soon, they were taking over his life.
At a glance, the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum in Milwaukee looks like a shrine to the sculptural form. On meticulously ordered shelves, the bobbleheads are lined up a few deep, row after row. It feels like the most glorious place on earth.
The museum’s director of operations, Katherine Lord, greets most visitors with a smile and a scavenger hunt challenge sheet. She then gently reminds them that the bobbleheads are there to be viewed, but not touched.
Novak and Sklar jokingly discussed quitting their jobs and going into the bobblehead business full-time. Often, they would kick back 20% of sales to an athlete or team’s favorite cause.
