If you love collecting bobbleheads, you’re in for a treat. A film based on the iconic collectibles has released its first trailer, and it’s quite the trip. The movie centers around four Bobbleheads that band together to get rid of some intruders into their family’s home. The animated film features plenty of action, a few stereotypes, and a guest appearance by Cher.
The ’80s pop icon bursts into the trailer in a puff of stage smoke and disco-ball glitz. The Queen of Reinvention has plenty of experience reinventing herself, from Oscar winner to Meryl Streep’s taste-maker and burlesque club owner. Her latest role adds to her list: a Bobblehead in the new animated movie Bobbleheads, directed by Beauty and the Beast’s Kirk Wise.
Cher joins a cast that includes Karen Fukuhara as space explorer Ikioi, Brenda Song as skateboarder Kelani, Julian Sands as cat-bobblehead Purrbles McCat, Khary Payton as baseball player Bobble Deuce, and Luke Wilson as Jim and his wife. The film opens on December 8th, and you can watch the trailer below.
In addition to the star-studded voice cast, the movie’s animated world is incredibly cool and imaginative. The bobbleheads move and bob with the action, a nice touch that should reach across generations of fans. The story is easy to follow, and while it may seem like a throwback to the Toy Story series, it’s also something unique to itself.
While there’s a lot to like about the bobblehead movie, the movie also suffers from some heavy-handed stereotypes and a lack of character development. This makes it feel very familiar, and that can be a little disappointing for fans of more sophisticated animated movies with more developed characters.
The movie is set to hit digital, DVD, and VOD on Dec. 8, and it will make its way to Netflix at a later date. The first film from the makers of PAYDAY is already proving popular, and one can only imagine how the movie will do once it’s available to more consumers.
Aside from the aforementioned appearance by Cher, another intriguing tidbit about Bobbleheads is that Microsoft is listed as the studio on the film’s title card. While that may seem random, it’s actually a nod to the fact that the movie was created in partnership with the tech giant.
The movie is based on the popular collectibles that are given away at MLB games. It was produced by 1440 Entertainment and Threshold Entertainment, with production taking place in Los Angeles, Nepal, India, and Mumbai. Universal Pictures will release the film.
