The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum has introduced a quartet of Jesus bobbleheads — in time, as they say, for holiday gift-giving. The Milwaukee-based institution on Thursday inducted a full-sized bobblehead of Jesus, an ornament, a dashboard Jesus and one with bended knees that is designed to sit on the edge of a desk or mantel. “It’s a good reminder to love thy neighbor, even the guy with the flat tire on the side of the road,” said Bob Sklar, president and CEO of the Hall of Fame.
The statues come in various sizes and are modeled after a variety of religious traditions. The most traditional is a full-size Jesus on a cross, a likeness that has been used for centuries in art and architecture to depict the figure of Christ. A less traditional version, also based on a well-known painting of the figure, features Jesus dressed in a red robe with his hands clasped together. The third bobblehead depicts a figure seated with a book. The fourth features a smiling Jesus that was inspired by a famous painting of the figure by Gustav Klimt, which is part of a collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Besides the four Jesus bobbleheads, the Hall of Fame has a handful of other collectible Jesus figurines. A plastic Jesus statue has been a popular Christmas present since Paul Newman sang about his dashboard savior in the 1967 movie “Cool Hand Luke.” The Hall of Fame has more than 11,000 bobbleheads and about 7,000 are on display at any given time. Some are relatively rare, including a small batch that was commissioned by a minor league baseball team as a game-night giveaway honoring a former player.
Another famous bobblehead of Jesus is Buddy Christ, created by comedian Orel Hershfield for a campaign to renew the image of Catholicism. The Church had viewed the crucifix image as wholly depressing, and Hershfield’s character was conceived as a more upbeat alternative. The character has gone on to become a popular meme on the Internet.
