Kids pinch pot Clay man Bobble head project

Ceramic League on Miami member Jill Gerlach gives easy step by step directions on how to make a clay bobble head from a pinch pot. This project works well with ages 7 and up. Tools needed, knife, chopstick, wooden skewer, old credit cards (for smoothing) and clay slip.

The goal is to teach the children the skill in making something, then allowing them the freedom to create on their own, but still following the techniques you have just shown them.
Stress the importance of scoring (I always use slip as well, but that is up to you) and blending in the joins. Also if they add on appendage’s make them close to the body, this will reduce breakage. Always check to see that the head is balancing and make sure the base isn’t so wide that it stops the head from having movement.
In the video I don’t show the finishing touches of cleaning up the piece. A small stiff paint brush can be used to wipe excess slip away.

The Ceramic League of Miami is a non profit 501© 3 offering opportunities for the community to learn and work with clay. We have approximately 120 members, who participate in the running of the school and maintaining their facility.
